Alongside its panelised solution of Light Gauge Steel Frames (LGSF), Mansell will also deliver its first ever hot rolled steel podium structure to the entire ground floor, providing unrivalled structural integrity. The podium structure will house eight independent living apartments and a range of communal spaces for the Academy of Living Well with the LGSF structure constructed directly above.
Appointed by main contractor, Rowlinson, Mansell’s remit includes installing brick tie channels, insulation and cavity trays, all applied in factory settings to facilitate rapid construction on site.
The wider project also includes an abundance of facilities, such as a first-floor garden and courtyard area car parking with under-croft entrance.
Situated on the former St Thomas’ Hospital site in Shaw Heath, which dates back to the 1840s and has been vacant since 2004, the project required meticulous access planning due to space constraints.
Good housing and health are at the heart of the Greater Manchester strategy and the Academy of Living Well forms a central part of this. Operating on an innovative ‘household model’, residents will benefit from modern bedrooms and facilities, complemented by open plan communal space.
