The Department of Psychology wants SMEs, charities and the public sector to be able to make decisions with confidence, backed by evidence provided through its Behavioural Data Service (BDS) which will help them understand their customers better.
According to the Office for National Statistics, £50 billion was spent on R&D in the UK in 2023, with the biggest share going to scientific research. However, research is often out of reach for smaller organisations, putting them at a disadvantage.
The Edge Hill team aim to give SMEs access to data-driven Research and Development (R&D) opportunities which are standard among large corporations with big budgets and specialised staff.
Professor Linda Kaye, Associate Head of the Department for Psychology (Knowledge Exchange and Marketing), said: “We are excited to share our expertise with businesses and organisations to bring about economic and societal impact.
“Our new Behavioural Data Service is part of the wide range of services we offer at Edge Hill to support businesses in all aspects of their work, from strategy and marketing to operational management and HR. We do this through understanding human behaviour – that of individuals and within organisations.”

The BDS team can support business improvement in many areas, including product development, customer service and the customer journey – the first contact potential customers have with a business through to their final purchase.
Their specialisms range from neuroscience to behavioural science, with the skills to design and evaluate research data. Their expertise includes:
- Ethical data management
- Data Insights
- Data Analysis and Interpretation
- Evaluation Services
- Neuroimaging Analysis (interpreting data from images of the brain and nervous system)
- Natural Language Processing (the use of AI to understand language).
